Coughing alleviates cervical biopsy pain

Women who have underwent cervical biopsy know the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. Voluntary coughing during cervical biopsies has been shown to alleviate the pain, according to a study done by investigators in Vienna, Austria.

Women with abnormal Pap smears who subsequently underwent cervical biopsy were randomized to two strategies for pain relief. A total of 68 women (mean age, 34 years) were assigned to Group 1 who received local anesthesia (injection of 1% lidocaine, 0.5 mL), and the Group 2, who were instructed to cough at the precise time of the biopsy. Patients reported pain associated with speculum insertion, anesthesia injection, biopsy, and the entire procedure.

Using a 10-cm visual analog scale, median ratings for biopsy pain were 1.5 cm in the lidocaine group and 1.9cm in the coughing group, showing almost comparable relief in the pain induced by cervical biopsy. The median pain scores associated with biopsies were not significantly different for the two groups. However, the mean duration of the entire procedure was shorter with forced coughing than with local anesthesia.

Despite its limitations, the study affords women with an additional way to alleviate pain should they need to undergo cervical biopsy. It may be employed even if local anesthesia has already been given for additional relief of pain and discomfort. The authors in the study noted that distraction is the likely mechanism for its benefit. It was also noted that coughing is a simple intervention with no cost and no downside.

Now appreciating digital hearing aids

Basketball is just my favorite sport and now I am a part of a basketball varsity team that represents the school for competitions. We do a lot of hard work and training just to make sure that we are competitive enough that we will win every game. But problems sometimes come unexpectedly. One time when all of us players were in the shower room and a water pipe just got broken and cannot stop pouring water. We were very worried because the water started to go to the gym where we use to practice and to training. Our coach was alarmed and he called immediately on his phone to ask a friend about where we can ask for help. Being surrounded with people who are very in-tune with nature gave me all the idea to have a garden wedding. I am currently looking for a reception place for my wedding day ever since my long time boyfriend proposed marriage to me 2 weeks ago. It was Sunday morning when he told me about his plans for the future and I was actually surprised when he opened his drawer and gave a ring. I was speechless for a while but finally said yes to him. Although I have no hesitations to marry him, I was caught off guard since we have not talked about getting married for while. Getting married in front of all of our love ones is one thing that I always dream about. Since most of my relatives love outdoor activities and gardens we planned to have a garden reception where everyone can enjoy open-air venues. So when I learned about Michigan gardens that offers more than we have planned, I immediately grabbed on to their wedding package and get the remaining slot. I was so impressed with how their planners were able to accommodate all of our needs. They simply new what we wanted considering that my soon-to-be husband demands a lot. The lush gardens looked well-maintained and can accommodate all of our guests. There will be freshly cut flowers surrounding the area that can add an air of intimacy on our wedding day. It will absolutely be a perfect venue for us and for both of our families and we cannot wait for that special day to happen.

With more than 4500 miles of coastline, any beach lover would be crazy to not want to take a Brazilian vacation. And to make matters even more exciting it’s like spring break all year round with parties and the sunsets and the white sand and what the country is most known for today-the Brazilians themselves! Ready to go? Here are my top 5 of the many, many beaches to choose from in exotic Brazil.

1. Copacabana- This would probably make any Top 10 beaches in the world list. Because of its popularity, accommodation rates are very competitive. It can get much crowed even if it coast is 4 kilometer long. Famous for its parties, this is also home to futevolei (foot volleyball)

2. Ipanema- A very fashionable beach, this is mini-bikini central. Even with skin overload. Ipanema is actually one of the more family-oriented beaches in the country. That’s just a hint on how the other party beaches compare in terms of being wet and wild.

3. Jericoacoara- This word means “hole of turtles,” so you can expect to see many turtles on the shore. But the main attraction here is the sunset, which is best viewed on the Sunset Dune. This is where you can witness one of the most impressive sunsets as the setting sun clashes with the dune.

4. Pipa- Here you can get lucky with the dolphins. It’s a cove where the waves can both be strong and calm. You can do all sorts of things here from surfing to canoeing. And with the lush greens inland and spectacular cliffs, nature-tripping is the most logical thing to do.

5. Fernando de Noromha- A group of volcanic islands protected by the government, this is the definition of exclusivity as the number of visitors is limited at any given time. There are no hotels here, only villas for rent. And that, my friends, comes with brow-raising price tag.
